LAY OF THE SHIP
Every watchkeeper needs a mental map of the boat. The bow bites into the sea, the stern trails the wake, and the keel runs like a backbone beneath. Above deck you’ll find the mast hoisting flags, the bridge steering the course, and the deck where most drills unfold.
Below, frames and bulkheads divide the hull into safe compartments. The mess deck is where the crew eats together, the galley keeps the tea and stew bubbling, and the helm turns orders into tight manoeuvres. Knowing these spots speeds up damage control, firefighting, and moving calmly in the dark.
JACK SPEAK — FRIENDLY NAVAL SLANG
Sailors sprinkle Jack Speak into everyday chatter — quick slang that keeps things light while still getting the job done. It must stay respectful and clear.
• “Scran up in the mess” — time to eat together on the mess deck.
• “Hands to the galley” — lend a hand with pots and pans in the ship’s kitchen.
• “Brace the helm” — hold steady at the wheel for a sharp turn.
• “Stand by the fo’c’sle” — get forward near the bow, ready for lines or anchors.
When you hear Jack Speak, match the phrase to the right part of the ship and the task moves faster.
